From Chef to Author: My Unexpected Journey

I never imagined myself writing books, especially after a lifetime spent in the bustling world of restaurants and hotels. Working long hours every day leaves little room for much else, and the thought of writing seemed far-fetched. However, retirement brought a change. With ample free time, I found myself organizing the countless pictures, notes, and recipes I had amassed over the years.

Yes, it was a trip down memory lane.

Among these were stories I had penned about the places I had visited. It wasn’t until my friend Donald Carr paid me a visit that the idea of writing books truly took shape. As he sifted through my folders, he urged, “You need to write books, and I will help you.” Donald, an exceptional writer, became my partner in this new venture. Our first project was “A New Nicaraguan Cuisine,” which was well-received by attendees of my cooking classes. Buoyed by this success, we embarked on another book, “My Childhood Years,” which was to chronicle my journey as a chef.

But life has a way of throwing curveballs. Tragically, Donald suffered a major heart attack while walking his beloved dog. His sudden passing brought our dream to a halt. I lost not only a great friend but also my writing partner. Finding someone in Nicaragua to help with my grammar and spelling seemed impossible.

Then, technology stepped in. Thanks to ChatGPT, I revived my career as a storyteller. While I may never achieve literary fame, I believe my books offer a unique glimpse into the cultures of the places I’ve visited, lived, and cooked in. They are not just collections of recipes but narratives rich with history and culture. Perhaps they will inspire you to explore new destinations on your next vacation.

One thing is certain: my writing partner, this machine, will outlive me by hundreds of years.
